A template, not legal advice. Giveaway law varies by country and state (for example, prize value thresholds and registration rules), so check local requirements for large prizes.
What Instagram giveaway rules need to include
Instagram's promotion guidelines put the responsibility for lawful rules on the host. At minimum your rules should say who can enter, the start and end time, how to enter, what the prize is and what it's worth, how and when the winner is picked and contacted, how long the winner has to claim, and a statement that the promotion isn't sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram. In the US, a giveaway picked by chance must also be free to enter ("no purchase necessary"), otherwise it can count as an illegal lottery.
Where do I put the rules?
Put the short version in the caption and link the full rules from your bio, a highlight, or a page on your website. Many small hosts paste the full rules as the first comment on the post.
How do I prove I followed my own rules?
Pick the winner with a tool that checks each rule and keeps a record. The Pick Is Right checks follows, likes, tags and keywords before showing the winner and gives you a public results page listing every entrant and why anyone was disqualified. It's free up to 250 comments. For more, read our Instagram giveaway rules and compliance guide and see how often entrants break the rules.
